Krieger notes that their latest release, Sonnet 3.7, shows a 45% reduction in prompt refusal compared to its predecessor. ‘We envision a spectrum of models, ranging from the extremely adventurous to the exceptionally cautious,’ he explains. ‘My ultimate satisfaction would lie in users perceiving our models as achieving a harmonious balance.’

Krieger: Our core mission is to empower individuals in their work, whether it’s coding, knowledge-based tasks, or other professional endeavors. We’re less focused on entertainment-centric, purely consumer use cases. I believe there’s still significant untapped potential in the consumer AI space, but it’s not our immediate priority.

Having led a billion-user service, I can attest to the excitement and fulfillment of building at that scale. While I hope Claude reaches a broad audience, our ambitions don’t currently depend on achieving widespread consumer adoption.

The Path to AI Leadership: Beyond Mass Adoption

Question: If mass adoption isn’t the primary objective, what is Anthropic’s path to leadership?

Krieger: Our strategy unfolds along two main lines. First, we remain committed to building and training the world’s most advanced AI models. Our exceptional research team is a testament to this dedication. We will continue to invest in this area, leveraging our strengths and making these capabilities accessible through our API.

Second, we are focused on creating vertical experiences that unlock the potential of AI agents. These agents go beyond single-turn interactions, assisting users in both their personal and professional lives. Claude Code represents our initial foray into vertical agents, specifically targeting coding. We have plans to introduce additional agents that capitalize on our model’s strengths and address specific user needs, including data integration. Expect to see us expand beyond Claude AI and Claude Code with a range of specialized agents in the coming year.

Question: Many developers are enthusiastic about Cursor, which is powered by your models. How does Anthropic decide when to compete with its customers, as is the case with Claude Code?

Krieger: This is a nuanced and sensitive issue for all AI labs, and one that I approach with utmost care. For instance, I personally contacted Cursor’s CEO and our key coding customers to provide advance notice of Claude Code’s launch, emphasizing its complementary nature. We’re observing users leveraging both tools.

The underlying model powering Claude Code is identical to the one driving Cursor, Windsurf, and even GitHub Copilot. A year ago, most of these products didn’t even exist, with Copilot being the exception. We are optimistic that we can navigate these occasional close adjacencies collaboratively.

Powering the New Alexa: A Strategic Partnership

Question: Anthropic is playing a key role in powering the revamped Alexa. Amazon is a significant investor in your company. How did this product partnership originate, and what does it signify for Anthropic?

Krieger: It unfolded during my third week at Anthropic. Amazon showed a strong desire to innovate. The opportunity resonated deeply with me, as we could contribute our frontier models and expertise in optimizing them for complex use cases. Amazon, in turn, possessed an extensive device ecosystem, broad reach, and established integrations.

This partnership actually marked one of my two coding contributions at Anthropic. More recently, I had the chance to build some features for Claude Code, which is particularly beneficial for managers. It allows them to delegate tasks before meetings and then review the results afterward. With Alexa, I developed a rudimentary prototype demonstrating the interaction with an Alexa-like system powered by a Claude model.

The Implications of the Alexa Deal: Beyond the Specifics

Question: Without delving into the financial intricacies of the Alexa deal, what are the broader implications for your models?

Krieger: While we can’t disclose the precise economics, the partnership proved mutually exciting. It served as a catalyst for us, particularly in terms of latency optimization. We essentially condensed a year’s worth of optimization efforts into a three-to-six-month timeframe. I value customers who challenge us and set ambitious deadlines, as it ultimately benefits everyone. Many of these enhancements are incorporated into the models available to all users.

Seeking Further Distribution Channels: The Potential of Siri

Question: Would Anthropic be open to more distribution partnerships akin to Alexa? It appears Apple might be seeking assistance with Siri. Is that a direction you’d consider?

Krieger: We are eager to power as many of these platforms as possible. Our strength lies in consultation and partnership. Hardware development isn’t a current focus internally, as we need to strategically prioritize our existing advantages.

Product Development in a Research-Driven Environment: A Balancing Act

Question: As a CPO, how do you navigate the dynamics of a research-intensive company like Anthropic? How do you anticipate future developments when groundbreaking research breakthroughs might be just around the corner?

Krieger: We dedicate significant thought to the vertical agents we aim to deliver by the end of this year. We aspire to assist users in research and analysis. There are numerous compelling knowledge worker use cases we want to address.

If incorporating certain data into the pretraining phase is crucial, that decision needs to be made promptly to manifest those capabilities by mid-year or later. We must operate with both agility in product delivery and adaptability, maintaining a clear vision of our six-month objectives to inform research direction.

We conceived the idea of more agentic coding products when I joined, but the models weren’t quite ready to support the desired product. As we approached the 3.7 Sonnet launch, we felt confident. It’s a delicate dance. Waiting for the model to be perfect means you’re too late to build the product proactively. However, you must also be prepared for the model to not be exactly where you need it and be flexible in delivering a different iteration of the product.

Coding Prowess and its Impact on Hiring: Rethinking Engineering Roles

Question: Anthropic is at the forefront of model development for coding. Have you begun to reassess your hiring strategies and headcount allocation for engineers?

Krieger: I recently spoke with one of our engineers who utilizes Claude Code. He highlighted that the most challenging aspect remains aligning with design, product management, legal, and security teams to actually ship products. Like any complex system, resolving one bottleneck often reveals another area of constraint.

We continue to hire a substantial number of software engineers this year. In the long term, however, we envision designers being able to progress further up the stack by translating their Figma designs into initial running versions, or even multiple versions. Product managers, as is already happening within Anthropic, can prototype initial versions of their ideas using Claude Code.

Predicting the absolute number of engineers required is difficult, but we anticipate delivering more products and expanding our scope rather than simply accelerating the shipment of existing ones. The speed of product delivery remains more constrained by human factors than by coding alone.

The Anthropic Advantage: Culture and Collaboration

Question: What would you say to someone weighing a job offer between OpenAI and Anthropic?

Krieger: I would encourage them to spend time with both teams. The products, and especially the internal cultures, differ significantly. Anthropic places a stronger emphasis on alignment and AI safety, although this might be less pronounced on the product side compared to pure research.

One of our key strengths, which I hope we preserve, is our highly integrated culture, devoid of fiefdoms and silos. We’ve fostered exceptional communication between research and product teams. Researchers actively welcome product feedback to refine the models. It truly feels like a unified team and company, and the challenge as we scale is to maintain this cohesion.
